Massachusetts Real Estate Listings – Should I Use The Internet Or The Newspaper?

If you are beginning your search for real estate in Massachusetts, you will need to find out what properties are available. The two most common methods of finding real estate listings are through the Internet and newspapers.

The Internet has revolutionized the whole home search process making it simple to find up-to-date information on properties all over Massachusetts, including Framingham and the whole Metrowest area where I specialize. The MLS (Multiple Listing Service) makes it easy to do a customized search for the exact specifications you are looking for. My website even offers a free MLS search (see my menu bar link above for MLS Search).

While many potential home buyers use newspapers to find homes, it is very time consuming as you need to sort through the most suitable listings, write down phone numbers, and are potentially viewing outdated information as some newspapers are updated on a weekly basis. You might need to call up the owner/broker to check to see if the listing is still even available.

Internet real estate listings are updated much more often and you do not have to wait until the newspaper listings get published. You may even lose out on a deal if relying solely on the newspaper. This is because making the first offer can make a large difference in the real estate industry and it may be too late if the real estate listing shows up on the Internet days before the newspaper. The Internet also lets you view pictures of the properties ahead of time without having to waste time visiting the property to realize the property is of no interest to you. While newspapers can sort listings by location of the properties, the Internet can save you precious time by picking your exact requirements, which appear immediately. You can even just printout the Massachusetts properties you are interested in instead of writing down phone numbers, and give your broker the MLS number for further research. Your broker can even have automatic email listings sent to you each day showing Massachusetts homes that meet your specific requirements.

In summary, viewing real estate listings on the Internet offers much convenience and benefit over viewing listings in the newspaper, but feel free to use both methods.
